Sigeric, Abbot of Glastonbury, went to Rome in 990 to receive the investiture as Archbishop of Canterbury from Pope John XV. During the return trip he wrote down 80 stops in a diary; his journey was initially known as the Sigerico itinerary and, only later, as the Via Francigena.
