- BRIEF GUIDE OF SIENA -
by Stefano Maccianti

ANSWER:

The three mosaics are the latest addition to the facade, in the second half of the 19th century. They are based on drawings by Sienese masters of the purist era. On the left you can admire The Presentation in the Temple by Alessandro Franchi, on the right The Nativity, by Luigi Mussini and in the center The Coronation of the Virgin, also by Mussini. For non-Catholics or forgetful Catholics: the cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The Virgin, according to the Catholic tradition, never died, but she fell asleep and was raised, body and soul, to Heaven where she was crowned. However, the Assumption became a dogma of the Church only in 1950 thanks to Pope Pius XII. However, it must be remembered that in the figurative art of the city the Assumption is represented almost seven centuries in advance. Just enter the cathedral to admire the stained glass window that Duccio di Buoninsegna made in 1288.
